3. What is different about the IE Master in International Management?

The Master in Management Program at IE Business School is firmly committed to professional growth based on a competence-driven management model. This approach is what differentiates the program and is in keeping with IE’s spirit of innovation, which has positioned it among the best business schools in Europe and worldwide. Students have to acquire all three of the following competencies that make for effective management in the 21st century:

1. Technical competencies
Fluency in tools and know-how related to all-round business management and the specific areas of marketing, finance, sales, etc.
2. Strategic competencies
Far-reaching vision and the capacity to interpret the changes taking place in the marketplace as well as the forces that bring them about. The ability to anticipate imminent changes and influence the environment accordingly, not merely adapt to it.
3. Personal competencies
Given that the individual is the foundation on which organizations are built, strategic vision and technical fluency must be rounded off with personal skills. The Master in Management program places emphasis on these skills through the Talent Management Program, affording personal change the status of the cornerstone of professional advancement.

We believe that if a future manager, leader or entrepreneur lacks any one of these competencies, he/she will not be able to inspire team-mates or potential customers, hence we strive to instill them in each one of our students in the most practical and dynamic way. What we are not looking for is to repeat a traditional university experience based on theory and academic discourse, single base-lecture classes, passive learning methodology. Here you will analyze problems, come up with creative solutions, work in a team and participate very actively in the classroom.

Besides this vision, compared to other programs, IE´s Master in International Management will also differ in the variety of options to customize your program:

  • Choose to study in English, Spanish or Bilingual format
  • Develop an entrepreneurial mindset to distinguish you from your competitors through the optional Venture-Lab
  • Participate in an optional international residential week in cities like Shanghai, Milan or Silicon Valley (depending on the chosen specialization)
  • The optional Beyond Borders Experience is an exciting way to personalize your final period at IE. You will be able to choose from a host of personalization options: an international exchange period at one of the many top institutions around the world with which we are partners, opening the door to the ever-invaluable experience provided by exposure to new cultures; research or consultancy project that will enhance your learning experience emphatically and broadened you view of the marketplace; or a dual-specialization option allowing you to become an expert in two areas of choice and broad your professional chances.

4. Is IE Master in International Management recognized by the Bologna
agreement? How many ECTS credits will I have by the end of the program?

Yes. Students acquire 60 ECTS credits for the mandatory 10-months, Master in International Management. Now, if students choose to study the optional dual-specialization, during the Beyond Borders Experience, they will earn around 20 extra ECTS.

5. Rankings.

To be eligible to participate in the FT ranking, the IE Master in International Management program has to have run for at least four years and have graduated its first class at least three years before the ranking publication date (please find more information here). At this moment, we are currently on the second intake of the Master in International Management.

Once we have this precedent, we are confident that will achieve a good position in the FT survey.

6. How is a Master in Management degree different and comparable
to an MBA? Which one should I choose?

The Masters in Management (MiM) are designed for young professionals at their early stages of their professional development. Master in Management candidates are around 23 years old and will probably have few internship experiences. Their main needs are from IE perspective are 1) to specialize in a functional area in order to map a career path and 2) to adopt a practical approach to the job market and acquire a broader picture of the requirements and trends of business realities. The average MBA student, on the other hand, will be some 27 years old and have four or five years of solid work experience. The MBA student will be at a stage in his/her career where he/she needs more general management tools to accelerate and or change his/her career.

Generally speaking we understand that employers might consider a 22-year old MBA overqualified for the graduate trainee scheme, yet underqualified for the senior positions earmarked for MBA recruits. Hence IE runs programs aimed at two specific career path stages: recent-graduates and young professionals (MiM) and experienced professionals (MBA). So what you have to decide is which offering is best suited to your needs, circumstances and professional aspirations.

IE sees the MBA as a qualification that allows participants to demonstrate and apply their previous employment experience. As it’s a general management program, we believe that a minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience is required to glean the full benefits of the program.

However a number of brilliant and ambitious young professionals do not want to wait several years to supplement their education and want to embark on their career with a head start, as well as a powerful network. The Master in International Management will allow you to do just that. Students will gain general management skills during the “business fundamental” period, and then acquire expertise in a functional area in which they would like to develop their career path, differentiate themselves and have a far greater chance to ensure that they enable their business to deliver objectives and ultimately grow.....Students can focus on sales, marketing and public relations (Sales & Marketing specialization); innovation and digital business development (Digital Business), or international operations and worldwide transactions (International Business). For 2011, IE is planning to launch specializations in Human Resources, Accounting, Entrepreneurship or Tourism Management among others.

A last suggestion would be to download the course description of the programs you´re interested in, compare the syllabus, and if you’re still undecided, you can always apply for up to two programs on the same application.

7. What international exposure will I get at IE?

The Master in International Management is one of the most tangible results of the school’s firm commitment to internationalization in terms of program content, international faculty, and extremely high levels of diversity of nationalities, backgrounds and cultures among the programs’ student body. Diversity is a key factor of IE life, given that about 80-90% of students in our English-taught programs are from overseas, and there are some 74 nationalities on the IE campus at any given time. The IE Alumni Association is one of the largest alumni associations in Europe with over 40,000 members worldwide. Moreover, 50% of IE’s faculty is international, originating from 40 different countries. Last but not least, our locations in the heart of Madrid, Spain’s vibrant capital, makes students time at IE a truly global experience.

9. Does IE support their students financially?

IE successful candidates have various financial aid options available to assist them with the not inconsiderable cost of pursuing a Master in International Management. Please visit www.ie.edu/financialaid or http://financialaid.ie.edu/wf_faqs.aspx for detail information.

10. What is the deadline for applications? Are there any benefits to
being in an earlier round? How far in advance do you recommend I apply?

IE Business School operates a ROLLING ADMISSIONS PROCESS. As such, there is NO EXPLICIT DEADLINE for applications for a particular intake. However we do recommend that you apply in advance as it works in the candidates favor to know that he/she is thinking about the program in advance. Applicants set their own deadlines.

For international students, we recommend a year in advance, and for national and European students, around eight months.

But it is important that you take into account the following when establishing your own tentative deadline:

  • The IE Admissions Process will take between 30 to 45 days from the moment you present the full application package, regardless of whether you do it at one of IE’s International Offices around the world or directly in Madrid.
  • If you need any scholarships or financial aid you need to take into account that deadlines for financial aid are usually earlier. Further information at www.ie.edu/financialaid or from the institution that supplies the scholarship you’re applying for.
  • You may simply assume that there are still places available on the program and intake of your choice – based on past experience this is by no means always the case since there are waiting lists and “late-applications” might not be successful.
  • Your nationality quota may be reached very early on – for some countries with a large number of applications we need to restrict access to the program to guarantee overall class diversity.
  • If you need a student visa before moving to Madrid, you should consider that the process may take from 30 to 60 days from the moment you apply for the visa at the Spanish Embassy of your country. One of the documents the Embassy will request is proof from IE that you’re officially enrolled in our institution. To issue this document and send it to your home address, we will need around 15 days from the moment your place reservation is confirmed. Your place reservation can only be made once you have been admitted and received from the Admissions Department the instructions for the down-payment of 20% of the tuition fees.
  • If you are working you will need to give your company due notice that you will be leaving.

Try to schedule your application in order to have a comfortable timeframe to make your move to Madrid as smooth as possible for you, for your family and your company.
